Choosing which departmental commitments belong on a planning dashboard—and which stay in the workbook appendix.
Departmental budget pages balloon because every manager wants their line visible. For a planning dashboard aimed at mid-sized enterprise leadership, visibility must earn its place.
Ask which departments move cash or covenant metrics this quarter. Those earn a primary row. Supporting departments can appear as a grouped “other operating” band with a drill path for analysts. Capital commitments that span years deserve a separate strip so they do not distort monthly opex variance.
In Bangkok board packs we often replace twenty departmental bars with five decision rows plus a footnote listing excluded teams. Directors leave with clearer asks for the CFO, and controllers stop reprinting the full workbook for every meeting.
Noise is not generosity. A quieter department view is a kindness to everyone who must decide under time pressure.
